Story Behind the Invention

Inventor Chris Dorety of Hopewell, NJ has created a visual aid that looks like a piano keyboard and is used for better determining the direction of improvisational music.

Most improvisational music is repetitious and without direction. An attempt to change key, cords or tempo results in one or more people shouting out changes over the music. These changes can rhyme, such as C, D, E, G, or B, making it difficult to understand what is being said. As a musician, Inventor Dorety was well aware of this and knew there had to be another way. In turn, he created The Jam Assistant!

This clever new invention is divided into four sections: keys, tempos, time signatures, and modes. Each section of the board has a different colored puck. Moving the puck will visually communicate changes in the music. This will make it much easier to understand and will eliminate error or mishearing. The device can be used for musicians of all ages and levels.
